If the results do not match expectations, the design is modified and the process is repeated until a satisfactory design is obtained. Exa Corporation on the other hand, has 350 employees and a revenue of “a mere” $72 million. Its flagship product StarCCM+, covers a wide range of engineering disciplines including fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, heat transfer, particle dynamics, reactant flow, electrochemistry, acoustics and rheology. CD-Adapco is a well-established company with 900 employees worldwide, a revenue of $200 million at the moment of the acquisition, double digit margins, and more than 12% year-to-year increase in revenue. On paper, Siemens acquired the best available computational fluid dynamics company. It seems as if Siemens has won this war and that Dassault-Systèmes has had to settle for second best. Fast-forward to September 28th 2017, Dassault Systèmes announced its plan to acquire Exa Corporation for $400 million. At the time, this was seen as an important blow to Dassault Systèmes who was reportedly also trying to acquire CD-Adapco.

On January 25th 2016, Siemens announced its plan to acquire CD-Adapco for $970 million.
